How to find NGC1487 from Canopus

Follow the route from one recognizable star to the next until you reach NGC1487.

NGC1487 is only 8° above the horizon, so the view is likely to be poor. No suitable observing time was found during the next two nights.

Canopus

Center Canopus in the finder or a low-power eyepiece before following the field stars.

From Canopus, move about 5.9° toward the west until you reach HYG 27321.0.

From HYG 27321.0, move about 6.9° toward the west until you reach HYG 23649.0.

From HYG 23649.0, move about 6.7° toward the northwest until you reach HYG 20934.0.

From HYG 20934.0, move about 5.3° toward the northwest until you reach HYG 19242.0.

From HYG 19242.0, move about 2.2° toward the west until you reach NGC1487. This is the target field.
